Buenconsejo family on Maui

Ka'ala and his family

Ka’ala Buenconsejo is the Director of Marketing for Na Hoaloha Ekolu, parent company of the Old Lahaina Luau, Aloha Mixed Plate, Star noodle and Leoda’s Kitchen and Pie Shop in Lahaina, Maui.

Born and raised in Hawai’i, Ka’ala is a 1991 graduate of H.P. Baldwin High School in Wailuku. After graduating he attended Maui Community College and graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies. Ka’ala then made his way to the University of Hawaii at Manoa and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism.

Ka’ala started his career as an intern for KHON Channel 2 News, where he was a weekend field reporter. As time went on he had an opportunity to return to Maui and join the Kapalua Land Company as their Public Relations Coordinator. During that time Ka’ala was responsible for all media visits for the Mercedes Championship and the annual Kapalua Food & Wine Festival. As his career developed he found himself on the Big Island at the Hilton Waikoloa Village where he served as the Special Events Director, overseeing the Guest Activities Department, as well as Hilton Waikoloa’s annual event:  Dolphin Day’s Food & Jazz Festival.

In 2007, Ka’ala and his family welcomed an opportunity to return home to Maui, when he accepted a position as the Sales and Marketing Manager for Old Republic Title & Escrow. Ka’ala enjoyed the transition into the real estate industry and became a Loan Officer for two of Hawaii’s leading lenders Central Pacific Homeloans and Bank of Hawai’i. He also got his real estate license and is currently an active Realtor with Elite Pacific Properties. In 2011, as our lending industry continued to tighten, Ka’ala was fortunate to be offered an opportunity at his present company, allowing him to utilize over 10 years of public relations and marketing experience with the extraordinary Na Hoaloha Ekolu ohana.  He has contributed in numerous organizations like Toast Masters, Maui County Jaycees, Pacific Marine Life Foundation, Hawai’i Shriners Hospital for Children, Habitat for Humanity, Boys & Girls Club, Hawaiian Island Land Trust, Lahaina Honolua Senior Citizens, Lahaina Girls Softball, West Maui County Youth Basketball and much more.

Ka’ala resides in Hawaiian Homes Lahaina at the Villages of Leiali’i. He is married to Doreen Buenconsejo, and together they have three Children: Teani (11), Tainoa (8) and Tali (5). Ka’ala is running for the Maui County Council where he will work tirelessly on behalf of the West Maui community to address affordable housing, jobs and protecting the resources vital to what makes Maui special.

Priorities

Protecting our neighborhood quality of life is the primary reason why I decided to seek your vote for public office.  Whether it is clean beaches, enabling initiatives to let our kupuna age in place, or insuring our kids have open spaces to play, I would like to be your voice in keeping our community on track to be a desired place to live and grow.

Not immune to the hardships of the last decade, Maui County saw its share of suffering during the recession.  We need to continue to support public and private partnerships that will continue to invest in growing the industries that will increase jobs.  We must also work together in encouraging and supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses that serve as our community’s backbone, and continue to find ways to efficiently collaborate for the benefit of our neighbors.

Keeping our Maui families protected at all times is a concern for all of us.  Ensuring that our police, fire, and emergency personnel have what they need to fulfill their missions is important to the safety and well-being of our community, and vital to protecting our way of life.
